Shipping Container Dimensions (U.S. Standard)

Shipping containers are built to standardized international dimensions, allowing them to be transported easily by ship, truck, and rail across global logistics networks.

In the United States, the most commonly used container types are:

  • 20ft Standard Container

  • 40ft Standard Container

  • 40ft High Cube Container

Each container type has different dimensions, cargo capacity, and payload limits, making them suitable for different transportation and storage requirements.

20ft Shipping Container Dimensions

The 20ft container is widely used for heavy cargo and smaller shipments. Because of its compact size and strong payload capacity, it is often preferred for dense goods such as machinery, metal products, and industrial materials.

Typical specifications include:

  • Exterior dimensions: 20 ft x 8 ft x 8 ft 6 in

  • Interior length: approximately 19 ft 4 in

  • Interior width: approximately 7 ft 8 in

  • Interior height: approximately 7 ft 10 in

  • Capacity: around 1,170 cubic feet

20ft containers are also commonly used for portable storage and construction site storage.

40ft Shipping Container Dimensions

The 40ft container offers nearly double the internal space of a 20ft container and is one of the most widely used containers in international shipping.

Typical specifications include:

  • Exterior dimensions: 40 ft x 8 ft x 8 ft 6 in

  • Interior length: approximately 39 ft 5 in

  • Interior width: approximately 7 ft 8 in

  • Interior height: approximately 7 ft 10 in

  • Capacity: around 2,390 cubic feet

These containers are commonly used for bulk cargo shipments, retail goods, and export logistics.

40ft High Cube Container Dimensions

A 40ft High Cube container has the same length and width as a standard 40ft container but includes an additional 1 foot of height.

Typical specifications include:

  • Exterior dimensions: 40 ft x 8 ft x 9 ft 6 in

  • Interior height: approximately 8 ft 10 in

  • Capacity: around 2,694 cubic feet

High Cube containers are ideal for bulky cargo, furniture shipments, and container modification projects.

You can often identify a High Cube container by the zebra markings on the upper corners, which indicate the increased height.

Choosing the Right Container Size

Selecting the correct container depends on several factors:

  • Cargo weight

  • Cargo volume

  • Transportation method

  • Storage requirements

Businesses typically choose:

  • 20ft containers for heavy cargo

  • 40ft containers for large shipments

  • 40ft High Cube containers for bulky goods
